The Home of Food

“The staff at Sand Hill Foundation care deeply about how best to utilize their resources to accomplish good in the world. They always have thoughtful questions about how are we going to be able to accomplish our goals and, most importantly, are willing to continue to invest in us as we reach them and set new ones.”
— Jared Lawson, Co-Founder and Co-Director

Pie Ranch is a working farm on the San Mateo coast that hosts underserved youth from regional high schools to participate in farm-based programs and activities. The staff at Pie Ranch have found that when youth have hands-on experience with nature that nourishes them physically, mentally, and spiritually — and gain a true understanding, perhaps for the first time, of how the earth actually works — that knowledge sticks with them forever.

With a small capital grant from Sand Hill Foundation, Pie Ranch was able to purchase a passenger van to use for its youth trips to the farm and for other outings.

They were also able to complete work on an outdoor kitchen where youth learn how to make nutritious and delicious meals with produce they helped gather from the fields, eggs collected from the mobile chicken coops, and milk from the farm’s goats and cows.

Excursions and field-work at Pie Ranch provide youth with the foundation for a lifelong path to healthful relationships — with food, the earth, and with one another.
